Dr. Lindau is an expert in engineering solutions to injustice together with the patients and communities she serves. Her scholarly work focuses on problems in two fields related by a central theme of health equity: sexuality in the context of disease and aging and health of populations living in poverty.
Specialized areas of leadership and expertise include population-based and clinical survey research especially with older and lower literacy populations; development and application of minimally invasive biological, sensor-based, and other objective measures of health and behavior; and the integration of experimental with systems science approaches, including agent based modeling. Catalyzed by a 2012-15 Health Care Innovation Award from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the CommunityRx project, Dr. Lindau is founder, co-owner and Chief Innovation Officer of NowPow, LLC, a social enterprise IT company, and president of MAPSCorps, 501c3, a youth-focused community asset mapping organization that now operates several geographies. Together, these organizations close the information gap about vital community resources while creating meaningful information economy jobs, especially for youth.
In collaboration with Reverend Karen Hutt and Pritzker medical students, Dr. Lindau began Feed1st, a program that aims to address the issue of food insecurity experienced by family members during a child’s hospitalization. The program currently offers open-access, 24/7 food pantries on five floors of the children’s hospital and services patients, caregivers, and staff who experience hunger or food insecurity.
A practicing gynecologist, Dr. Lindau leads the Program in Integrative Sexual Medicine at the University of Chicago Medicine to preserve and restore sexual function in women affected by cancer and was founding chair of the international Scientific Network on Female Sexual Health and Cancer. She served the Patient-Reported Outcomes Committee for the Gynecology Oncology Group and the 2016 ACOG Women’s Preventive Services Initiative Multidisciplinary Steering Committee. She has published widely in the high-impact medical literature in the fields of sexuality, aging and population health.
Dr. Lindau earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and secondary education at the University of Michigan and her medical degree at Brown University. She completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency and served as chief resident at Northwestern University, and earned her master’s degree in public policy as an Irving B. Harris Fellow at the University of Chicago. She was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Chicago, and she serves the program’s National Advisory Committee. Dr. Lindau was awarded a 2016-18 Aspen Health Innovators Fellowship and is a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
